English Translation
Waki' told us, Nafi' ibn 'Umar al-Jumahi told us, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said: The two good men, Abu Bakr and 'Umar, nearly perished. When the delegation of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, one of them suggested al-Aqra' ibn Habis al-Hanzali, brother of Banu Mujashi', and the other suggested someone else. Abu Bakr said to 'Umar: "You only wanted to oppose me." 'Umar said: "I did not want to oppose you." Their voices rose in the presence of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so there was revealed: {O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} up to His saying {...great}. Ibn Abi Mulaykah said: Ibn al-Zubayr said: After that, 'Umar - and he did not mention this about his father, meaning Abu Bakr - when he spoke to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he would speak to him like one who whispers a secret, so that he would not be heard until he was asked to repeat it.
