English Translation
Isam b. Khalid narrated to us: Isa b. Yunus b. Abi Ishaq al-Hamdani narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Dhu al-Jawshan, who said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing him the colt of a mare of mine. I said, "O Muhammad, I have brought you the colt of al-Arja' for you to take." He said, "I have no need of it, but if you wish, I can exchange for it a choice coat of mail from the armor of Badr." I said, "I would not exchange it today for any equipment." He said, "Then I have no need of it." Then he said, "O Dhu al-Jawshan, will you not become Muslim, so that you may be among the first in this matter?" I said, "No." He said, "Why?" I said, "I have seen your people set fiercely against you." He said, "How then did news of their fall at Badr reach you?" I said, "It reached me." I said, "If you should prevail over Makkah and settle there..." He said, "Perhaps, if you live, you will see that." Then he said, "O Bilal, take the man's saddlebag and provision him with some ajwah dates." When I turned to leave, he said, "Indeed, he is among the best of Banu Amir." He said: By Allah, I was with my family at al-Ghawr when a rider approached. I said, "Where from?" He said, "From Makkah." I said, "What have the people done?" He said, "Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has taken control of it." I said, "May my mother be bereft of me! By Allah, had I become Muslim that day and then asked him for al-Hirah, he would have granted it to me." Abdullah narrated to us: Abu Bakr b. Abi Shaybah and al-Hakam b. Musa narrated to us: Isa b. Yunus narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Dhu al-Jawshan, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly. Muhammad b. Abbad narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Dhu al-Jawshan Abu Shimr al-Dibabi, a similar version of this hadith. Sufyan said: The son of Dhu al-Jawshan was a neighbor of Abu Ishaq — I do not think he heard it except from him.
