English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq told us: Ma'mar informed us, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained in Makkah for ten years, going after people in their dwellings at Ukaz and Majannah and during the pilgrimage seasons at Mina, saying: "Who will shelter me? Who will support me so that I may deliver the message of my Lord, and his is Paradise?" - so much so that a man would come out from Yemen, or from Mudar - so he said - and his people would come to him and say: "Beware of the young man of Quraysh, lest he tempt you," while he walked among their men who pointed at him with their fingers, until Allah sent us to him from Yathrib, and we sheltered him and believed him. A man of us would go out, believe in him, and he would teach him the Qur'an, and he would return to his people, who would then accept Islam because of his acceptance of it, until there remained no house among the houses of the Ansar without a group of Muslims openly professing Islam in it. Then we all consulted together and said: "How long shall we leave the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, being driven about in the mountains of Makkah and living in fear?" So seventy men of us set out to him, arriving during the pilgrimage season, and we arranged to meet him at the ravine of al-Aqabah. We gathered to him one and two at a time until we had all assembled, and we said: "O Messenger of Allah, we pledge allegiance to you." He said: "You pledge allegiance to me to hear and obey in energy and in laziness, to spend in hardship and in ease, to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, to speak for the sake of Allah without fearing the blame of any blamer regarding Allah, and to support me and protect me, when I come to you, from what you protect yourselves, your wives, and your children - and for you is Paradise." He said: So we rose to him and pledged allegiance to him, and As'ad ibn Zurarah, who was among the youngest of them, took his hand and said: "Wait a little, O people of Yathrib. We have not driven our camels' bellies here except knowing that he is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and that bringing him out today means the parting of ways with all the Arabs and the killing of your best men, and that swords will bite into you. So either you are a people who will endure that, and your reward is upon Allah; or you are a people who fear for yourselves out of cowardice, then make that clear, for it would be an excuse for you before Allah." They said: "Get out of our way, O As'ad! By Allah, we will never abandon this pledge, nor will we ever withdraw from it." He said: So we rose to him and pledged allegiance to him, and he took our pledge and its conditions, and he gave us in return for that Paradise. Dawud ibn Mihran told us: Dawud - that is, al-Attar - told us, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu al-Zubayr Muhammad ibn Muslim, that he related to him from Jabir ibn Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained ten years - and he mentioned the hadith, saying: 'until a man would travel openly from Mudar and from Yemen,' and he said 'parting of ways with the Arabs,' and he said 'you fear for yourselves fearfully,' and he said regarding the pledge 'we will not seek release from it.' Ishaq ibn Isa told us: Yahya ibn Sulaym told us, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained ten years - and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said: 'until a man would travel from Mudar and from Yemen,' and he said 'parting of ways with the Arabs,' and he said, in the speech of As'ad, 'you fear for yourselves fearfully,' and he said regarding the pledge 'we will not seek release from it.'
