حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ وَعَفَّانُ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ أَخْبَرَنَا قَتَادَةُ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا قَالَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأُخِذَ الْيَهُودِيُّ فَجِيءَ بِهِ فَاعْتَرَفَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رُدُّوا عَلَيْهِمْ مَا قَالُوا.
English Translation
Bahz and Affan narrated to us, both said: Hammam narrated to us: Qatadah informed us, from Anas, that a Jew passed by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "As-Samu alaykum," so the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, returned the greeting to him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He only said, As-Samu alaykum." So the Jew was seized and brought, and he confessed, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Return to them what they said."
