English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us: Hajjaj told us, who said: I heard Qatadah narrating from Anas ibn Malik, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was brought a man who had drunk wine, and he struck him with two palm-branches, about forty times. He said: Abu Bakr also did this. Then when it was 'Umar's time, he consulted the people, and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said, "The lightest of the prescribed punishments is eighty." So 'Umar ordered that.
