English Translation
Yunus narrated to us: Shayban narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas, who said: and Anas ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that some twenty-odd men among the chiefs of Quraysh be thrown into one of the wells of Badr, a foul and filthy one. He said: When he prevailed over a people, he used to stay in their courtyard for three nights. He said: So when he prevailed at Badr, he stayed three nights, and when it was the third day, he ordered his mount, and it was saddled, then he walked, and his companions followed him. They said: "We thought he was only going to relieve himself." He said: Until he stood at the edge of the well, and began calling out to them by their names and the names of their fathers: "O so-and-so son of so-and-so, would it have pleased you had you obeyed Allah and His Messenger? Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?" 'Umar said: "O Prophet of Allah, are you speaking to bodies that have no souls in them?" He said: "By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are not more able to hear what I say than they are." Qatada said: Allah, Mighty and Sublime, brought them back to life for him, so that they heard his words, as a rebuke, a belittlement, and a punishment.
