English Translation
Isma'il ibn Ibrahim told us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq told us, he said: Ubaydullah ibn al-Mughirah ibn Mu'ayqib told me, from Sulayman ibn Amr ibn Abd al-Utwari, one of Banu Layth, who was an orphan under the guardianship of Abu Sa'id — Sulayman ibn Umar, who is Abu al-Haytham, the one who narrates from Abu Sa'id — he said: I heard Abu Sa'id say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: "The Bridge will be set up across the middle of Hell, upon it thorns like the thorns of the sa'dan plant. Then people will attempt to cross: one saved unscathed, one scratched and let go, then one saved, and one held back, thrown down headfirst into it. When Allah, Mighty and Sublime, has finished judging between His servants, the believers will miss men who used to be with them in the world, praying as they prayed, paying zakat as they paid zakat, fasting as they fasted, performing Hajj as they performed Hajj, and fighting as they fought. They will say: 'Our Lord, servants among Your servants were with us in the world, praying our prayers, paying our zakat, fasting our fasts, performing our Hajj, and fighting our battles — we do not see them.' He will say: 'Go to the Fire, and whoever you find there among them, bring him out.' They will find them, the Fire having seized them according to their deeds — some it seized up to their feet, some up to the middle of their shins, some up to their knees, some up to their waists, some up to their breasts, some up to their necks, but it did not cover their faces. They will bring them out of it and throw them into the Water of Life." It was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what is the Water of Life?" He said: "The washing-water of the people of Paradise. They will sprout like the sprouting of a seed" — and he said another time — "as a seed sprouts in the silt of a flood. Then the prophets will intercede for everyone who used to bear witness that there is no god but Allah sincerely, and they will bring them out of it." He said: "Then Allah will show tenderness through His mercy upon those who remain in it, and He will not leave in it any servant who has in his heart the weight of a single grain of faith without bringing him out of it."
