حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، قَالَ قُلْتُ لاِبْنِ عَبَّاسٍ يَزْعُمُ قَوْمُكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَدْ رَمَلَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَأَنَّ ذَلِكَ سُنَّةٌ . قَالَ صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا . قُلْتُ وَمَا صَدَقُوا وَمَا كَذَبُوا قَالَ صَدَقُوا قَدْ رَمَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَكَذَبُوا لَيْسَ بِسُنَّةٍ إِنَّ قُرَيْشًا قَالَتْ زَمَنَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ دَعُوا مُحَمَّدًا وَأَصْحَابَهُ حَتَّى يَمُوتُوا مَوْتَ النَّغَفِ . فَلَمَّا صَالَحُوهُ عَلَى أَنْ يَجِيئُوا مِنَ الْعَاِمِ الْمُقْبِلِ فَيُقِيمُوا بِمَكَّةَ ثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَقَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ مِنْ قِبَلِ قُعَيْقِعَانَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لأَصْحَابِهِ " ارْمُلُوا بِالْبَيْتِ ثَلاَثًا " . وَلَيْسَ بِسُنَّةٍ . قُلْتُ يَزْعُمُ قَوْمُكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم طَافَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَأَنَّ ذَلِكَ سُنَّةٌ فَقَالَ صَدَقُوا وَكَذَبُوا . قُلْتُ مَا صَدَقُوا وَمَا كَذَبُوا قَالَ صَدَقُوا قَدْ طَافَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ عَلَى بَعِيرِهِ وَكَذَبُوا لَيْسَ بِسُنَّةٍ كَانَ النَّاسُ لاَ يُدْفَعُونَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَلاَ يُصْرَفُونَ عَنْهُ فَطَافَ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ لِيَسْمَعُوا كَلاَمَهُ وَلِيَرَوْا مَكَانَهُ وَلاَ تَنَالَهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ .
English Translation
Hadrat Abu al-Tufayl says: I said to Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both): Your people believe that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) performed ramal during the circumambulation of the Ka'bah, and that this is a sunnah. He (may Allah be well pleased with them both) replied: They spoke truth in part and falsehood in part. I asked: What truth did they speak and what falsehood? He said: They spoke truth in saying that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) performed ramal, but they spoke falsely in calling it an established sunnah. The real matter is that the Quraysh said at the time of Hudaybiyyah: Leave Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his companions alone; they will perish like vermin. When they agreed upon a treaty that he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his companions would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days, the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came, and the idolaters were watching from the side of Qu'ayqi'an. The Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) then instructed his companions: Perform ramal in the first three circuits. But this is not an enduring sunnah. I said: Your people also believe that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) performed sa'i between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a camel, and that this is a sunnah. He replied: They spoke truth in part and falsehood in part. I asked: What truth and what falsehood? He said: They spoke truth in that the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) performed sa'i between al-Safa and al-Marwah upon a camel, but they spoke falsely in calling it a sunnah. In reality, the people would not move away from the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) nor give way, so he rode upon a camel to perform sa'i so that they could hear his blessed speech, behold him, and their hands could not reach him.
Urdu Translation
حضرت ابوالطفیل فرماتے ہیں: میں نے حضرت ابنِ عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے عرض کیا: آپ کی قوم کا خیال ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے بیت اللہ کے طواف میں رَمَل فرمایا اور یہ سنت ہے۔ حضرت ابنِ عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے فرمایا: انہوں نے سچ بھی کہا اور غلط بھی۔ میں نے عرض کیا: کیا سچ کہا اور کیا غلط؟ فرمایا: سچ یہ کہا کہ سرکارِ دو عالم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے رَمَل فرمایا، لیکن غلط یہ کہا کہ یہ سنتِ مؤکدہ ہے۔ اصل واقعہ یہ ہے کہ قریش نے حدیبیہ کے موقع پر کہا تھا: محمد (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اور ان کے ساتھیوں کو چھوڑ دو، وہ کیڑوں کی طرح خود ہی مر جائیں گے۔ پھر جب ان سے اس شرط پر صلح ہوئی کہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم آئندہ سال آ کر مکہ میں تین دن قیام فرمائیں، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم تشریف لائے اور مشرکین قُعَیقِعان کی جانب سے آئے، تب سرکارِ دو عالم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنے اصحاب سے ارشاد فرمایا: تین چکروں میں رَمَل کرو۔ اور یہ (ابدی) سنت نہیں ہے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: آپ کی قوم کا خیال ہے کہ حضور صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے صفا و مروہ کے درمیان اونٹ پر سوار ہو کر سعی فرمائی اور یہ سنت ہے۔ فرمایا: سچ بھی کہا اور غلط بھی۔ میں نے عرض کیا: کیا سچ کہا اور کیا غلط؟ فرمایا: سچ یہ ہے کہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے صفا و مروہ کے درمیان اونٹ پر سعی فرمائی، لیکن غلط یہ ہے کہ یہ سنت ہے۔ دراصل لوگ سرکارِ دو عالم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس سے نہ ہٹتے تھے اور نہ پیچھے سرکتے تھے، تو آپ نے اونٹ پر سوار ہو کر سعی فرمائی تاکہ لوگ آپ کا کلامِ مبارک سنیں، آپ کا دیدار کریں اور ان کے ہاتھ آپ تک نہ پہنچ سکیں۔
