'Alqamah said: A man came to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I come from a man who dictates copies of the Quran from memory." 'Umar was alarmed and said: "Woe to you! Watch what you say!" — and he became angry. The man said: "I have come to you with nothing but the truth." 'Umar asked: "Who is he?" He said: "'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud." 'Umar said: "I know of no one more deserving of that than him." Then he said: "I will tell you about 'Abdullah. One night we stayed up late at Abu Bakr's house for some matter concerning the Prophet (peace be upon him). Then we went out, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was walking between Abu Bakr and me. When we reached the mosque, there was a man praying. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood listening to him. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, it is late.' He nudged me with his hand — meaning 'be quiet.' The man recited, bowed, prostrated, and sat supplicating and seeking forgiveness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Ask and you shall be given.' Then he said: 'Whoever would be pleased to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite as Ibn Umm 'Abd recites.' Then Abu Bakr and I realized who it was. In the morning I went to 'Abdullah to give him the glad tidings, but he said: 'Abu Bakr has already beaten you to it.' And never did I race Abu Bakr to any good except that he beat me to it."
