Suraqah narrated: "The messengers of the disbelieving Quraysh came to us offering the blood-money for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr — the blood-money of each — for whoever killed or captured them. While I was sitting in a gathering of my people of Banu Mudlij, a man came and said: 'O Suraqah, I just saw some black figures on the coast. I think it is Muhammad and his companions.' Suraqah said: 'I recognized that it was them, but I said: They are not them; you saw so-and-so who went out seeking something.' Then I waited only a short while before I got up and went into my house. I ordered my slave girl to take out my horse from behind a hillock. I took my spear and went out from the back of the house, dragging its tip on the ground and lowering the shaft until I reached my horse. I mounted and spurred it until I could see them. When I got close enough for them to hear my voice, my horse stumbled and I fell off. I reached into my quiver, drew out the divination arrows, and cast lots — should I harm them or not? The result came that I disliked — that I should not harm them. But I mounted my horse and disobeyed the arrows. When I drew close again and heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) reciting — he was not looking back, while Abu Bakr was looking back frequently — my horse's front legs sank into the ground up to its knees. I fell off and urged it until it stood up. When it stood, smoke rose from where its legs had been — like a pillar of smoke rising to the sky. I cast the arrows again and the result came that I disliked. So I called out to them with a pledge of safety. They stopped, and I rode up to them. When I reached them, having experienced what I experienced of being prevented from them, I knew that the cause of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would prevail. I said to him: 'Your people have set a bounty on you,' and I told them the news of their journey and what the people intended for them. I offered them provisions and goods, but they did not take anything from me. They only asked me to conceal their whereabouts. I asked him to write me a document of security, so he ordered 'Amir ibn Fuhayrah to write it for me on a piece of leather. Then he went on."
