Abu Ayyub said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stayed with me, I said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, I dislike being above you while you are below me. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "It is more convenient for us to be on the lower floor because of the people who visit us." I saw a jar of ours break and its water spill. I and Umm Ayyub got up with our only quilt - we had no other blanket - to soak up the water, fearing that any of it might reach the Messenger of Allah and disturb him. We used to prepare food for him, and when he returned what remained, we would seek the places where his fingers had touched and eat from them, seeking blessing. One night he returned his dinner - we had put garlic or onion in it - and we did not see the marks of his fingers in it. I mentioned to him what we used to do and what we saw of his returning the food without eating. He said: "I found the smell of that plant in it, and I am a man who converses (with the angel), so I did not like that my smell be found. As for you, eat it."
