Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) toward Khaybar. Then Allah the Exalted granted us victory, but we did not seize gold or silver (that is, gold and silver did not come into our hands); rather we obtained as spoils goods, grain, and cloth. Then we set out toward the valley, and with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was a slave of his (whose name was Mid'am), whom a man of Judham named Rifa'ah ibn Zayd had gifted to him (peace be upon him), and he was of Banu Dubayb. When we came down into the valley and the slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood unfastening his (peace be upon him) saddle, an (unseen) arrow struck him, in which was his death. We people said, "O Messenger of Allah! Congratulations, he is a martyr." He (peace be upon him) said, "Never! By the One in whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace be upon him), the cloak that he took from the spoils on the day of Khaybar is blazing upon him like fire, while the spoils had not yet been distributed." Hearing this, the people became afraid, and a man came with one or two straps and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I took these on the day of Khaybar." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "This strap or these straps are of fire." (That is, had you not returned them, this strap would have become a live coal wrapping around you on the Day of Resurrection, or you would have been punished on account of these straps.)

سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہہم رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ خیبر کی طرف نکلے۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ نے ہمیں فتح دی، تو ہم نے سونا اور چاندی نہیں لوٹا (یعنی چاندی اور سونا ہاتھ نہیں آیا) بلکہ ہم نے اسباب، اناج اور کپڑے کا مال غنیمت حاصل کیا۔ پھر ہم وادی کی طرف چلے اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا ایک غلام تھا (جس کا نام مدغم تھا) جو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکو جذام میں سے ایک شخص جس کا نام رفاعہ بن زید تھا، نے ہبہ کیا تھا اور وہ بنی ضبیب میں سے تھا۔ جب ہم وادی میں اترے اور رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا غلام کھڑا ہوا آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا کجاوہ کھول رہا تھا کہ اتنے میں ایک (غیبی) تیر اس کو لگا جس میں اس کی موت تھی۔ ہم لوگوں نے کہا کہ یا رسول اللہ! مبارک ہو وہ شہید ہے۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ ہرگز نہیں قسم اس ذات کی جس کے ہاتھ میں محمد (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) کی جان ہے کہ وہ چادر اس پر آگ کی طرح سلگ رہی ہے جو اس نے مال غنیمت میں سے خیبر کے دن لے لی تھی اور اس وقت تک غنیمت کی تقسیم نہیں ہوئی تھی۔ یہ سن کر لوگ ڈر گئے اور ایک شخص ایک تسمہ یا دو تسمے لے کر آیا اور کہنے لگا کہ یا رسول اللہ! میں نے خیبر کے دن ان کو پایا تھا۔ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ یہ تسمہ یا تسمے آگ کے ہیں (یعنی اگر تو ان کو واپس نہ کرتا تو یہ تسمہ انگارہ ہو کر قیامت کے دن تجھ پر لپٹتا یا تجھے ان تسموں کی وجہ سے عذاب ہوتا)[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1180]
