Thabit said: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said that my uncle, after whom I was named (that is, his name too was Anas), could not take part in the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). This weighed heavily upon him, and he said, "I was absent from the first battle of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him); now, if Allah the Exalted places me with him (peace be upon him) in any other battle, Allah the Exalted will see what I do." And he was afraid to say more than that (that is, to make any other claim, such as 'I will do this or that,' because perhaps he might not be able to, and would then prove false). Then he went with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to the Battle of Uhud. The narrator says that Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came before him (and in the narration of Bukhari it is that he came having been routed), so Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "O Abu Amr" (this is the kunyah of Sa'd bin Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him), "where are you going?" Then (without waiting for his reply, he himself) said, "I smell the fragrance of Paradise from behind Mount Uhud." Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then he fought the disbelievers until he was martyred. (After the battle) it was seen that on his body were more than eighty (80) wounds from swords, spears, and arrows. His sister — that is, my aunt Rubayyi bint an-Nadr — said, "I could not recognize my brother except by his fingertips (because his whole body was mangled with wounds)." And this verse was revealed: "Among the believers are men who were true to what they pledged to Allah... Some of them have fulfilled their vow, and some are still waiting, and they have not altered in the least" (al-Ahzab). ثابت کہتے ہیں کہسیدنا انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ میرے چچا جن کے نام پر میرا نام رکھا گیا ہے (یعنی ان کا نام بھی انس تھا)، رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ بدر کی لڑائی میں شریک نہیں ہو سکے تھے۔ اور یہ امر ان پر بہت مشکل گزرا اور انہوں نے کہا کہ میں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکی پہلی لڑائی میں غائب رہا اب اگر اللہ تعالیٰ دوسری کسی لڑائی میں مجھے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ کر دے، تو اللہ تعالیٰ دیکھ لے گا کہ میں کیا کرتا ہوں اور اس کے سوا کچھ اور کہنے سے ڈرے (یعنی کچھ اور دعویٰ کرنے سے کہ میں ایسا کروں گا ویسا کروں گا کیونکہ شاید نہ ہو سکے اور جھوٹے ہوں)۔ پھر وہ رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے ساتھ احد کی لڑائی میں گئے۔ راوی کہتا ہے کہ سیدنا سعد بن معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ ان کے سامنے آئے (اور بخاری کی روایت میں ہے کہ شکست خورد ہو کر)، تو انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے ان سے کہا اے ابوعمرو (یہ کنیت سعد بن معاذ رضی اللہ عنہ کی ہے) کہاں جاتے ہو؟ پھر (ان کا جواب سنے بغیر خود ہی) کہا میں تو احد پہاڑ کے پیچھے سے جنت کی خوشبو پا رہا ہوں۔ انس رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ پھر وہ کافروں سے لڑے یہاں تک کہ شہید ہو گئے (لڑائی کے بعد) دیکھا تو ان کے بدن پر اسی (80) سے زائد تلوار، برچھی اور تیر کے زخم تھے۔ ان کی بہن یعنی میری پھوپھی ربیع بنت نضر نے کہا کہ میں نے اپنے بھائی کو نہیں پہچانا مگر ان کی انگلیوں کی پوریں دیکھ کر (کیونکہ سارا بدن زخموں سے چور چور ہو گیا تھا)۔ اور یہ آیت”وہ مرد جنہوں نے اپنا اقرار اللہ تعالیٰ سے پورا کیا .... بعض تو اپنا کام کر چکے اور بعض انتظار کر رہے ہیں اور نہیں بدلا انہوں نے کچھ بھی بدلنا“نازل ہوئی۔ صحابہ کہتے تھے کہ یہ آیت ان کے اور ان کے ساتھیوں کے بارے میں اتری۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1087]
