Hadrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: Before the prayers were made obligatory, we used to greet the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) while he was in prayer, and he would respond to us. When we returned from Abyssinia, I greeted him while he was praying, but he did not respond to me. I was gripped with anxiety about what had not gripped me before. When he finished, he stated: "Indeed, Allah creates from His command what He wills. And indeed, from what Allah has created is that you should not speak in the prayer. So when one of you is in prayer, he should not speak, but should glorify and extol Allah. And what he needs, let him gesture with his hand."
