Kharashah ibn al-Hurr narrated: I was sitting in a circle in the mosque of Madinah, and there was a handsome elderly man — he was Hadrat Abdullah ibn Salam (may Allah be well pleased with him). He was narrating beautiful hadith to them. When he stood up, the people said: "Whoever wishes to look at a man from the people of Paradise, let him look at this man." I said to myself: By Allah, I shall follow him and learn where his house is. I followed him until he almost left Madinah, then he entered his house. I sought permission and he permitted me. He asked: "What do you need, O nephew?" I said: "I heard the people say when you stood up: 'Whoever wishes to look at a man of Paradise, let him look at this man,' and I wanted to be with you." He said: "Allah knows best who the people of Paradise are. I shall tell you why they say that. While I was sleeping, a man came to me and said: 'Rise.' He took my hand and I went with him. I saw paths on my left and was about to take them. He said: 'Do not take them, for they are the paths of the people of the left.' Then I saw clear paths on my right. He said: 'Take these.' He brought me to a mountain and told me to climb it. I kept falling each time I tried. Then he took me to a pillar with its top in the sky and its bottom in the earth, with a ring at the top. He said: 'Climb it.' I said: 'How can I climb it when its top is in the sky?' He took my hand and raised me until I was clinging to the ring. He struck the pillar and it fell, but I remained clinging to the ring until morning. I came to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and told him. He stated: 'The paths you saw on your left are the paths of the people of the left. The paths on your right are the paths of the people of the right. The mountain is the station of the martyrs, and you shall not attain it. The pillar is the pillar of Islam, and the ring is the handhold of Islam. You shall remain holding onto it until you die.'"

خرشہ بن الحر سے روایت ہے: میں مسجدِ مدینہ میں ایک حلقے میں بیٹھا تھا جس میں ایک خوبصورت بزرگ تھے — یہ حضرت عبداللہ بن سلام رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ تھے۔ وہ لوگوں کو اچھی حدیثیں سنا رہے تھے۔ جب وہ اٹھے تو لوگوں نے کہا: جو جنتی آدمی دیکھنا چاہے وہ اسے دیکھ لے۔ میں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم میں ان کے پیچھے جاؤں گا اور ان کا گھر معلوم کروں گا۔ میں ان کے پیچھے گیا یہاں تک کہ قریب تھا مدینہ سے باہر نکل جائیں، پھر وہ اپنے گھر میں داخل ہوئے۔ میں نے اجازت مانگی تو اجازت دی اور فرمایا: کیا ضرورت ہے، بھتیجے؟ میں نے کہا: میں نے لوگوں کو آپ کے اٹھنے پر کہتے سنا: جو جنتی آدمی دیکھنا چاہے وہ اسے دیکھ لے — تو مجھے آپ کے ساتھ رہنا اچھا لگا۔ فرمایا: اللہ بہتر جانتا ہے جنت والوں کو۔ میں تمہیں بتاتا ہوں کیوں لوگ یہ کہتے ہیں: میں سویا ہوا تھا کہ ایک آدمی آیا اور کہا اٹھو۔ میرا ہاتھ پکڑا اور ساتھ لے گیا۔ میرے بائیں طرف راستے تھے، میں نے ان پر جانا چاہا تو کہا: ان پر مت جاؤ، یہ بائیں والوں کے راستے ہیں۔ پھر دائیں طرف واضح راستے تھے۔ اس نے کہا: یہاں سے جاؤ۔ مجھے ایک پہاڑ کے پاس لایا اور کہا: اوپر چڑھو۔ میں جب بھی چڑھنا چاہتا گر جاتا تھا، کئی بار ایسا ہوا۔ پھر مجھے ایک ستون کے پاس لایا جس کا سر آسمان میں تھا اور نیچے زمین میں، اور اوپر ایک حلقہ تھا۔ کہا: اس پر چڑھو۔ میں نے کہا: کیسے چڑھوں جب اس کا سر آسمان میں ہے؟ اس نے میرا ہاتھ پکڑا اور مجھے اٹھایا تو میں حلقے سے لٹک گیا۔ پھر اس نے ستون کو مارا تو وہ گر گیا لیکن میں حلقے سے لٹکا رہا یہاں تک کہ صبح ہو گئی۔ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آیا اور بتایا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «بائیں طرف جو راستے تم نے دیکھے وہ بائیں والوں کے راستے ہیں۔ دائیں طرف کے راستے دائیں والوں کے راستے ہیں۔ پہاڑ شہداء کے مقامات ہیں اور تم وہاں نہیں پہنچو گے۔ ستون اسلام کا ستون ہے اور حلقہ اسلام کا مضبوط حلقہ ہے۔ تم اسے پکڑے رہو گے یہاں تک کہ مر جاؤ۔»
