Ubay ibn Ka'b said: "Some people recite a verse from the Quran in a manner that is not correct, and I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recite it differently. So I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, did you not recite such-and-such a verse to me in such-and-such a way?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'But so-and-so recites it in such-and-such a way.' He said: 'Tell them both to come to me.' So they came. He said to the first: 'Recite.' He recited. He said: 'You have recited correctly.' Then he said to the other: 'Recite.' He recited differently. He said: 'You have recited correctly.' Then I said to myself: Why did he approve of both? He then struck my chest and I began to sweat with fear. He said: 'O Ubay, it was conveyed to me to recite the Quran in one mode, and I requested my Lord to make it easy for my ummah. He answered me a second time that I should recite it in two modes. Then I asked Him to make it easy for my ummah, and He answered me a third time: recite it in seven modes. And you have two supplications answered for each time you asked Me.'"
