Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Harith al-Faqih informed us, they said: Ali ibn Umar al-Hafiz informed us, Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn Buhlul narrated to us, my father narrated to us, Abu Usamah narrated to us, Husayn ibn Dhakwan informed me, Amr ibn Shu'ayb informed me, Sulayman the freed slave of Maymunah informed me. He said: I came upon Ibn Umar one day while he was sitting at al-Balat and the people were praying the Asr prayer. I said: 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, the people are praying.' He said: 'I have already prayed. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: No prescribed prayer should be prayed twice in one day.' Ali said: Al-Husayn al-Mu'allim was the only one who narrated this from Amr ibn Shu'ayb. And Allah Most High knows best. The Shaykh said: If this is authentic, it is understood to mean that he had already prayed it in congregation, so he did not repeat it. And his saying 'No prescribed prayer should be prayed twice in one day' means both on the basis of obligation. This indicates that the command to repeat the prayer is a recommendation and not an obligation. And Allah Most High knows best.
