Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us: Muhammad ibn Bakr reported to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us: Muhammad ibn al-Ala narrated to us: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us: al-A'mash narrated to us, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Yahya ibn al-Jazzar, from the nephew of Zaynab the wife of Abdullah — meaning Ibn Mas'ud — from Zaynab the wife of Abdullah, from Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Incantations (ruqa), amulets (tama'im), and love-charms (tiwalah) are shirk (polytheism)." She [Zaynab] said: I said, "Why do you say this? By Allah, my eye used to water, and I used to go to so-and-so, the Jew, who would recite over it, and when he recited over it, it would settle." Abdullah said: "That was only the work of Satan; he was pricking it with his hand, and when he [the Jew] recited over it, he refrained from it. It would have been enough for you to say, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'Remove the harm, O Lord of mankind; heal, for You are the Healer; there is no cure except Your cure — a cure that leaves no illness behind.'"
