Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan informed us in Baghdad, from Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Darastuwayh, from Ya'qub ibn Sufyan, from Abu Salih, from Mu'awiyah ibn Salih, that Damrah ibn Habib narrated to him, from Ibn Zughb al-Iyadi who said: Abdullah ibn Hawalah, a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), stayed with me. We had heard that he was allotted two hundred (dirhams) but he refused and accepted only one hundred. I said to him: Is it true what we heard, that you were allotted two hundred but refused and accepted only one hundred? — and by Allah, nothing prevented him, while he was staying with me, from saying: Woe to you! Is not one hundred enough for Ibn Hawalah every year? Then he began narrating to us from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), saying: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent us on foot around Madinah to gain spoils, but we returned without gaining anything. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw our hardship, he said: O Allah, do not leave them to me, for I am too weak for them; do not leave them to the people, who would disregard them and prefer themselves over them; and do not leave them to themselves, for they would be incapable. Rather, provide for them Yourself alone. Then he said: Al-Sham will surely be conquered for you, and then the treasures of Persia and Rome will be divided, and one of you will have such and such wealth, until one of you will be given one hundred dinars and be displeased with it. Then he placed his hand on my head and said: O Ibn Hawalah, when you see the caliphate has descended upon the Holy Land, then earthquakes, tribulations, and great events have come, and the Hour will be closer to the people than this hand of mine is to your head.
