Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi told us, he said Sufyan told us, from Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Jahm, who said: I heard Fatimah bint Qays say: My husband Abu Amr ibn Hafs ibn al-Mughirah sent Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah to me with my divorce, and he sent me five sa's of barley. I said, "I have no maintenance except this, and I will not observe my waiting period except in your house." He said, "No." So I gathered up my clothes and went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him. He said, "How many times did he divorce you?" I said, "Three." He said, "He is right; you have no maintenance. Observe your waiting period in the house of your cousin Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is blind of sight - you may put off your clothes before him. When your waiting period ends, inform me." She said: Then suitors proposed to me, among them Mu'awiyah and Abu Jahm. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "As for Mu'awiyah, he is poor, of light circumstances; and Abu Jahm beats women; but - there is a certain harshness in him toward women - marry Usamah ibn Zayd," or he said, "Marry Usamah ibn Zayd." Abd al-Rahman told us, he said Sufyan told us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Tamim, the freed slave of Fatimah, from Fatimah bint Qays, similarly.
