Sa'd ibn Ibrahim and Ya'qub told us, they said our father told us, he said Muhammad ibn Ishaq told us, he said Ma'mar ibn Abdullah ibn Handhalah told me, from Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam, from Khawlah bint Tha'labah, who said: "By Allah, it was concerning me and Aws ibn al-Samit that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed the opening of Surat al-Mujadilah." She said: I was married to him, and he was a very old man whose temper had become bad and irritable. She said: He came in to me one day, and I answered him back about something, and he became angry and said, "You are to me like my mother's back." She said: Then he went out and sat in the gathering of his people for a while, then he came in to me, and behold, he wanted me for himself. She said: I said, "No! By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Khuwaylah, you shall not reach me, since you have said what you have said, until Allah and His Messenger judge between us with His judgment." She said: He then pounced on me, and I resisted him, and I overcame him as a woman overcomes a weak old man, and I threw him off me. She said: Then I went out to one of my neighbors and borrowed some clothes from her, then I went out until I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I sat before him and told him what I had encountered from him, and I began to complain to him, peace and blessings be upon him, of what I suffered from his bad temper. She said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, began to say, "O Khuwaylah, your cousin is a very old man, so fear Allah concerning him." She said: By Allah, I had not left before the Qur'an was revealed concerning me, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was overcome by what used to overcome him during revelation, then it was lifted from him, and he said to me, "O Khuwaylah, Allah has revealed concerning you and your companion," then he recited to me: {Allah has heard the speech of the one who disputes with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah, and Allah hears your dialogue. Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing} up to His saying {and for the disbelievers is a painful punishment}. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "Tell him to free a slave." She said: I said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he has nothing with which to free a slave." He said, "Then let him fast two consecutive months." She said: I said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he is a very old man; he cannot fast." He said, "Then let him feed sixty poor persons a wasq of dates." She said: I said, "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, he does not have that either." She said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Then we will help him with an 'araq of dates." She said: I said, "And I, O Messenger of Allah, will help him with another 'araq." He said, "You have done well and rightly; go and give it in charity on his behalf, then treat your cousin well." She said: So I did. Sa'd said: the 'araq is a basket.
