Abu Usamah told us, he said Hisham - meaning Ibn 'Urwah - informed us, from 'Awf b. al-Harith b. al-Tufayl, from Rumaythah, mother of 'Abdullah b. Muhammad b. Abi 'Atiq, from Umm Salamah, wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: My companions [fellow wives] spoke to me, asking me to speak to the Messenger of Allah so that he would tell the people to send him gifts wherever he happened to be, for they were timing their gifts to 'A'ishah's day, and we love good things just as 'A'ishah loves them. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, my companions have asked me to speak to you, so that you order the people to give you gifts wherever you are, for the people time their gifts to 'A'ishah's day, and we only love good things as 'A'ishah loves them." She said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was silent and did not answer me. My companions came to me and I told them he had not answered me. They said, "Do not give it up; this is not the time to give it up." She said: Then it came round again and I spoke to him, saying, "My companions have asked me to speak to you, so that you order the people to give you gifts wherever you are." She said the same thing to him twice or three times, and each time the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent about it. Then he said, "O Umm Salamah, do not trouble me concerning 'A'ishah, for by Allah, revelation has never come to me while I was in the house of any of my wives except 'A'ishah." She said, "I seek refuge in Allah from displeasing you concerning 'A'ishah." 'Affan told us, Hammad b. Salamah told us, he said Hisham b. 'Urwah told us, from 'Awf b. al-Harith, from his sister Rumaythah bint al-Harith, from Umm Salamah, that the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her that the people time their gifts [to 'A'ishah's day], and he related the same meaning.
