Ali ibn Asim told us, from Khalid, from Abu Qilabah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Attab, who said: Abu Hurayrah used to say, "Whoever wakes up in a state of janabah has no fast." He said: So Marwan ibn al-Hakam sent me and another man to Aisha and Umm Salamah to ask them about a person who is junub at dawn during Ramadan, before he has performed ghusl. He said: One of them said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to wake up in a state of janabah, then perform ghusl, and complete the fast of his day." He said: And the other said, "He used to wake up in a state of janabah without having had a wet dream, then complete his fast." He said: So the two of us returned and informed Marwan of that. He said to Abd al-Rahman, "Inform Abu Hurayrah of what they said." So Abu Hurayrah said, "That is what I supposed, and that is what I thought." Marwan said to him, "With 'I think' and 'I suppose' you give legal rulings to the people?"
