Ali ibn Asim told us, he said: Hanzalah al-Sadusi informed us, from Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal, who said: Mu'awiyah led the people in the Asr prayer, then turned and saw people praying after Asr. So he went inside, and Ibn Abbas came in to see him, and I was with him. Mu'awiyah made room for him on the couch, and he sat with him. He said, "What is this prayer that I saw the people praying, which I never saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, pray, nor did he command it?" He said, "That is what Ibn al-Zubayr gives them as a ruling." Then Ibn al-Zubayr came in and gave the greeting of peace and sat down. Mu'awiyah said, "O Ibn al-Zubayr, what is this prayer that you command people to pray? We never saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pray it, nor did he command it." He said, "Aisha, Mother of the Believers, narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed it in her presence, in her house." He said: Mu'awiyah ordered me and another man to go to Aisha and ask her about that. He said: So I went in to her and asked her about that, and I informed her of what Ibn al-Zubayr had reported from her. She said, "Ibn al-Zubayr did not remember correctly. I only told him that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed these two rak'ahs after Asr in my presence. So I asked him about it - I said, 'You have prayed two rak'ahs that you did not use to pray.' He said, 'Something came to me, and I was occupied in distributing it, away from the two rak'ahs after Zuhr; then Bilal came to me and called me to prayer, and I disliked to detain the people, so I prayed them.'" He said: So I went back and informed Mu'awiyah. He said: Ibn al-Zubayr said, "Did he not indeed pray them? Then let us not abandon them." Mu'awiyah said to him, "You will never cease to be contrary."
