Waki' told us, from Sufyan, from Ibrahim b. Muhajir, from Rib'i b. Hirash, he said: One who never lied to me told me - meaning Hudhayfah - he said: Gabriel (peace be upon him) met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was at the Rocks of al-Mira', and said: "Your nation recites the Qur'an in seven modes; whoever among them recites according to one mode, let him recite as he learned it and not turn away from it." My father said, and Ibn Mahdi said: "Among your nation is the weak one; so whoever recites according to one mode should not shift from it to another out of aversion to it."
