حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ حَدَّثَنِي سَعْدُ بْنُ طَارِقٍ عَنْ بِلَالِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنِ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَعْرَابِيٌّ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَى قُرَيْشٍ إِلَّا أَنْفُسَهَا قُلْتُ مَا لَهُمْ قَالَ أَشِحَّةٌ نَحِرَةٌ وَإِنْ طَالَ بِكَ عُمْرٌ لَتَنْظُرَنَّ إِلَيْهِمْ يَفْتِنُونَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى تَرَى النَّاسَ بَيْنَهُمْ كَالْغَنَمِ بَيْنَ الْحَوْضَيْنِ إِلَى هَذَا مَرَّةً وَإِلَى هَذَا مَرَّةً.

Umar ibn Sa'd Abu Dawud al-Hafari told us, Yahya ibn Zakariyya - meaning Ibn Abi Za'idah - told us, Sa'd ibn Tariq told me, from Bilal ibn Yahya, from Imran ibn Husayn, who said: a bedouin informed me that he heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say, "I do not fear for Quraysh except from themselves." I said, "What is wrong with them?" He said, "Miserly and reckless; and if you live long, you will surely see them putting people to trial, until you see the people among them like sheep between two watering troughs, going to this one at times and to that one at times."
