When the verse of debt (2:282) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The first to deny (a covenant) was Adam, peace be upon him.' He said: 'When Allah the Almighty created Adam, He stroked his back and brought forth from him all his descendants until the Day of Resurrection. He displayed his offspring before him, and Adam saw among them a man who was radiant. He said: O Lord, who is this? He said: This is your son Dawud. He said: O Lord, how long is his lifespan? He said: Sixty years. He said: O Lord, increase his lifespan. He said: No, unless I add to it from your lifespan. Adam's lifespan was a thousand years, so he gave him forty years. Allah the Almighty wrote a document for that and had the angels witness it. When Adam's death approached and the angels came to take his soul, he said: I still have forty years remaining of my lifespan. He was told: You gave them to your son Dawud. He said: I did not do that. Then Allah the Almighty produced the document, and the angels testified against him.'
