Ya'qub narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm narrated to me, from Yahya ibn Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Sa'd ibn Zurarah, from Umarah ibn Amr ibn Hazm, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent me as a collector of zakah over Bali, Udhrah, all of Banu Sa'd, and Hudhaym ibn Quda'ah -- my father said, and Ya'qub said elsewhere "of Quda'ah" -- he said: I collected zakah from them until I came to the last man among them, whose dwelling and land were among the closest of their dwellings to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in Medina. He said: When he gathered his property before me, I found nothing due upon him except a yearling she-camel (ibnat makhad) -- meaning [in the category due] -- so I informed him that this was his due zakah. He said: "That is an animal with neither milk nor a back fit for riding. By Allah, neither the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, nor any messenger of his has ever come to my property before you, and I would not give to Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, from my property something with neither milk nor a back to ride; rather, here is a young, fat she-camel, so take it." I said to him: "I will not take what I have not been commanded to take. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is near you; if you wish to go to him and offer him what you offered me, do so. If he accepts it from you, he accepts it, and if he rejects it, he rejects it." He said: "Then I shall do that." So he went out with me, bringing along the she-camel he had offered me, until we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said to him: "O Prophet of Allah, your messenger came to me to take the zakah due on my property. By Allah, neither the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, nor any messenger of his has ever come to my property before him. I gathered my property for him, and he claimed that a yearling she-camel is due from me, which has neither milk nor a back to ride, so I offered him a young, fat she-camel to take, but he refused, and said: 'Here it is, I have brought it to you, O Messenger of Allah; take it.'" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "That which is due upon you is what he said; but if you volunteer something good, we shall accept it from you and Allah will reward you for it." He said: "Here it is, O Messenger of Allah, I have brought it to you; take it." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that it be taken, and prayed for blessing in his wealth. Abdullah narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to me: Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us: my father narrated to us: I heard Muhammad ibn Ishaq relate from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr, from Yahya ibn Abdullah, from Umarah ibn Hazm: Ubayy ibn Ka'b narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent him as a zakah collector -- and he mentioned something like the hadith of Ubayy, adding that Umarah said: "I was placed in charge of their zakah collections in the time of Mu'awiyah, and I took from that man thirty three-year-old she-camels (hiqqah) for the fifteen hundred camels he owned."
