حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ وَحَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى وَعَفَّانُ قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ أَخْبَرَنَا ثَابِتٌ عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ و حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَسَافَرَ سَنَةً فَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الْمُقْبِلُ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا.

Abd ar-Rahman ibn Mahdi, Hasan ibn Musa, and Affan narrated to us, they said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit -- and Affan said: Thabit informed us -- from Abu Rafi', from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him -- and Abdullah narrated to us: Hudbah ibn Khalid narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Thabit, from Abu Rafi', from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to make i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) during the last ten nights of Ramadan. One year he traveled and did not make i'tikaf, so the following year he made i'tikaf for twenty days.
