'Abdullah narrated to us: Nasr ibn 'Ali narrated to me, he said: Ma'di ibn Sulayman informed me, he said: I came to Mutayyar to ask him about the hadith of Dhu al-Yadayn, so I came to him and asked him, and he was an old man advanced in years, unable to relate the hadith due to his old age. His son Shu'ayth said: "Yes indeed, O father, you narrated to me that Dhu al-Yadayn met you at Dhu Khashab, and told you that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, led them in one of the two afternoon prayers, that is, the 'Asr, with two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation, and the people, in haste, went out, and he said: 'Has the prayer been shortened?' And among the people were Abu Bakr and 'Umar. Dhu al-Yadayn said: 'Has the prayer been shortened, or have you forgotten?' He said: 'The prayer has not been shortened, and I have not forgotten.' Then he turned to Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may God be pleased with them both, and said: 'What does Dhu al-Yadayn say?' They said: 'He has spoken the truth, O Messenger of God.' So the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, went back, and the people returned, and he led them in two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation, then performed with them the two prostrations of forgetfulness."
