Abdullah narrated to us: Abu Sulayman al-Dabbi Dawud b. Amr b. Zuhayr al-Musayyabi narrated to me: Abd al-Rahman b. Abi al-Zinad narrated to us, from his father, from Rabi'ah b. Abbad al-Dili — who had been a pagan and then embraced Islam — who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with my own eyes at the market of Dhu al-Majaz, saying, "O people, say: there is no god but Allah, and you will succeed," entering into its lanes while people crowded upon him. I never saw anyone say anything, and he would not fall silent, saying, "O people, say: there is no god but Allah, and you will succeed" — except that behind him was a cross-eyed man, radiant of face, with two braided locks, saying, "He is an apostate and a liar." I said, "Who is this?" They said, "Muhammad b. Abdullah, and he claims prophethood." I said, "Who is this one denying him?" They said, "His uncle, Abu Lahab." I said, "You must have been young then." He said, "No, by Allah, I was of an age to understand at that time."
