Affan told us, Abu Awanah told us, al-Aswad ibn Qays told us, from Nubayh al-Anazi, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went out from Madinah towards the polytheists to fight them, and my father Abdullah said to me: "O Jabir, it will not harm you to be among the observers of the people of Madinah, until you know how our affair turns out; for by Allah, were it not that I would leave behind daughters of mine after me, I would love for you to be killed before me." He said: So while I was among the observers, my aunt came with my father and my maternal uncle, carrying them both on a watering camel, and brought them into Madinah to bury them in our graveyards, when a man came calling out: "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commands you to go back with the slain and bury them where they fell." So we went back with them both and buried them where they had been killed. Then, during the caliphate of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, a man came to me and said: "O Jabir ibn Abdullah, by Allah, the work of Mu'awiyah has exposed your father." A part of it had come out, so I went to him and found him in the same state I had buried him, unchanged except for what killing does not leave, so I reburied him. He said: And my father left behind him a debt of dates, and one of his creditors pressed me hard in demanding payment, so I went to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "O Prophet of Allah, my father was struck down on such-and-such a day, and left upon me a debt of dates, and one of his creditors has pressed me hard in demanding payment; I would like you to help me with him, that he might grant me respite with a portion of his dates until this coming harvest." He said: "Yes, I will come to you, if Allah wills, near midday." And he came, with his close companion, then he asked permission and entered. I said to my wife: "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has come to me today at midday; let me not see you, nor should you trouble the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in my house with anything, nor speak to him." So he entered, and she spread out for him a bed and a cushion, and he laid his head down and slept. He said: And I said to a servant of mine: "Slaughter this young goat" - it was a fattened domestic one - "and hurry, be quick, finish with it before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wakes up, and I will be with you." So we did not stop working on it until we finished, while he was asleep. Then I said to him: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he wakes up, calls for water for purification, and I am afraid that when he finishes he will want to get up; so do not finish preparing his ablution water until you have placed the young goat before him." When he got up, he said: "O Jabir, bring me water for purification." He had not finished his ablution before I had placed the young goat near him. He looked at me and said: "It is as if you knew our love for meat! Call Abu Bakr for me." He said: Then he called his two companions who were with him, and they entered, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, struck his hand into the food and said: "In the name of Allah, eat," and they ate until they were satisfied, and much meat remained over from it. He said: By Allah, the gathering of Banu Salamah used to look at him, and he was dearer to them than their own eyes, and no man among them would come near him for fear of troubling him. When he finished, he got up, and his companions got up, and they went out ahead of him, and he used to say: "Leave my back for the angels." And I followed them until they reached the threshold of the door. He said: And my wife put out her chest - she had been concealed behind a screen in the house - and said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray for blessing upon me and upon my husband." He said: "May Allah's blessing be upon you and upon your husband." Then he said: "Call so-and-so for me" - meaning my creditor who had pressed me hard. He said: So he came, and he said: "Give Jabir ibn Abdullah ease with a portion of the debt that is upon his father, until this coming harvest." He said: "I will not do that," and he made an excuse and said: "It is only the property of orphans." He said: "Where is Jabir?" I said: "Here I am, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Measure out to him, for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will surely pay him in full." I looked up at the sky and saw that the sun had already declined. He said: "The prayer, O Abu Bakr," and they hastened to the mosque. I said: "Bring your containers near," and I measured out to him from the ajwah dates, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, paid him in full, and there remained over for us so-and-so much of the dates. I went running to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in his mosque, as if I were a spark, and found that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had already prayed. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you not see that I measured out to my creditor his dates, and Allah paid him in full, and there remained over for us so-and-so much of the dates?" He said: "Where is Umar ibn al-Khattab?" He came hurrying, and he said: "Ask Jabir ibn Abdullah about his creditor and his dates." He said: "I will not ask him; I already know that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would surely pay him in full, since you informed me that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would pay him in full." And he repeated this statement to him three times, each time saying: "I will not ask him," and it was his habit not to repeat a request after the third time. He said: "O Jabir, what did your creditor and your dates do?" I said: "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, paid him in full, and there remained over for us so-and-so much of the dates." He went back to his wife and said: "Did I not forbid you to speak to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" She said: "Did you think that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would bring the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, into my house, and then he would leave, and I would not ask him to pray for blessing upon me and upon my husband before he left?"
