Bahz narrated to us, Hammad—that is, Ibn Salamah—narrated to us, Ishaq ibn Abdullah narrated to us, from Anas ibn Malik: that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to meet a man and say, "O so-and-so, how are you?" and the man would say, "Well, praise be to Allah." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would then say to him, "May Allah keep you well." One day the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, met him and said, "How are you, O so-and-so?" The man said, "Well, if I am grateful." The Prophet fell silent. The man said, "O Prophet of Allah, you used to ask me and say, 'May Allah keep you well,' but today you have fallen silent about me." The Prophet said to him, "I used to ask you and you would say, 'Well, praise be to Allah,' and I would say, 'May Allah keep you well.' But today you said, 'If I am grateful,' making it conditional, so I fell silent about you."
