Muhammad ibn al-Nadr al-Azdi narrated to us, from Mu'awiyah ibn Amr, from Za'idah, from Hisham ibn Hassan, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Alqamah ibn Qays who said: We were with Abdullah ibn Mas'ud when a man came and said: 'I divorced my wife eight times.' Abdullah said: 'Did you say it all at once?' He said: Yes. He said: 'Did you intend for your wife to become irrevocably divorced from you?' He said: Yes. Then another man came and said: 'I divorced my wife by the number of the stars.' He said: 'Did you say it all at once?' He said: Yes. He said: 'Did you intend for her to become irrevocably divorced from you?' He said: Yes. Then Abdullah mentioned the women of the earth with something I do not recall, then Abdullah said: 'Allah has made clear for you how divorce works. Whoever divorces as Allah has commanded, it has been made clear for him. Whoever confuses matters, we will hold him to his confusion. By Allah, you will not confuse matters for yourselves and then expect us to bear it for you - it is as you say.'
