When Umar was killed, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud traveled to us within seven days and addressed us saying: 'The Commander of the Faithful, Umar, was struck by Abu Lu'lu'ah, the slave of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, while he was in the Fajr prayer, and he killed him.' Then he wept, and the people wept. Then he said: 'We, the Companions of Muhammad, gathered and appointed as leader the best among us, the most pre-eminent.'
