Abu Umamah said: When the heads of the Azariqah [Kharijites] were brought and displayed on the steps of Damascus, Abu Umamah came and when he saw them, his eyes welled up with tears. He said: "Dogs of the Fire, dogs of the Fire! These are the worst of those killed under the sky, and the best of those killed under the sky are those whom these people killed." I said: "Why did your eyes tear up?" He said: "Out of mercy for them, for they were from the people of Islam." I asked: "Did you say 'dogs of the Fire' from your own opinion or from something you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?" He said: "I would indeed be bold if I said something I did not hear. Rather, it is something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) more than once, twice, or three times." He counted many times, then recited: {On the Day when some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black} until he reached {therein they shall abide}, and recited: {It is He who has sent down to you the Book, in it are verses that are precise} until he reached {those of understanding}. Then he took my hand and said: "Indeed they are plentiful in your land, may Allah protect you from them."
