Abu Umamah said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by Baqi' al-Gharqad on an intensely hot day. The people were walking behind him. When he heard the sound of their sandals, his ego was affected, so he stopped and let them go ahead of him, lest any sense of pride enter his heart. When he passed by Baqi' al-Gharqad, he found two fresh graves. He stopped and asked: 'Whom did you bury here today?' They said: 'O Prophet of Allah, so-and-so.' He said: 'They are being punished and tested in their graves right now.' They asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, why?' He said: 'As for one of them, he used to walk about spreading gossip (namimah). As for the other, he did not clean himself properly from urine.' He took a fresh palm branch, split it in two, and placed one on each grave. They asked: 'O Prophet of Allah, why did you do that?' He said: 'To lighten their punishment.' They asked: 'O Prophet of Allah, how long will they be punished?' He said: 'That is unseen knowledge - none knows it except Allah.' He said: 'Were it not for confusion in your hearts or your exaggeration in speech, you would hear what I hear.'"
