Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:6349 حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا عَارِمٌ أَبُو النُّعْمَانِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ثنا أَيُّوبُ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْجَرْمِيُّ قَالَ كُنَّا بِحَضْرَةِ مَاءٍ مَمَرِّ النَّاسِ فَكُنَّا نَسْأَلُهُمْ مَا هَذَا الْأَمْرُ؟ فَيَقُولُونَ رَجُلٌ يَزْعُمُ أَنَّهُ نَبِيٌّ وَأَنَّ اللهَ أَرْسَلَهُ وَأَنَّ اللهَ أَوْحَى إِلَيْهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَجَعَلْتُ لَا أَسْمَعُ شَيْئًا مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِلَّا حَفِظْتُهُ كَأَنَّمَا يُغْرَى فِي صَدْرِي بِغِرَاءٍ حَتَّى جَمَعْتُ مِنْهُ قُرْآنًا كَثِيرًا قَالَ فَكَانَتِ الْعَرَبُ تُلَوَّمُ بِإِسْلَامِهَا الْفَتْحَ وَيَقُولُونَ انْظُرُوا فَإِنْ ظَهَرَهُ عَلَيْهِمْ فَهُوَ صَادِقٌ وَهُوَ نَبِيٌّ فَلَمَّا جَاءَتْنَا وَقْعَةُ الْفَتْحِ بَادَرَ كُلُّ قَوْمٍ بِإِسْلَامِ قَوْمِهِمْ فَانْطَلَقَ أَبِي بِإِسْلَامِ أَهْلِ حِوَائِنَا ذَلِكَ فَأَقَامَ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مَا شَاءَ اللهُ أَنْ يُقِيمَ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ فَلَمَّا دَنَا مِنَّا تَلَقَّيْنَاهُ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَاهُ قَالَ جِئْتُكُمْ وَاللهِ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَقًّا قَالَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّهُ يَأْمُرُكُمْ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا وَيَنْهَاكُمْ عَنْ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَأَنْ تُصَلُّوا صَلَاةَ كَذَا فِي حِينِ كَذَا فَإِذَا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُؤَذِّنْ أَحَدُكُمْ وَلْيَؤُمَّكُمْ أَكْثَرُكُمْ قُرْآنًا» قَالَ فَنَظَرُوا إِلَى أَهْلِ حِوَائِنَا فَمَا وَجَدُوا أَحَدًا أَكْثَرَ مِنِّي قُرْآنًا لِلَّذِي كُنْتُ أَحْفَظُ مِنَ الرُّكْبَانِ فَقَدَّمُونِي بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ فَكُنْتُ أُصَلِّي بِهِمْ وَأَنَا ابْنُ سِتِّ سِنِينَ قَالَ فَكَانَتْ عَلَيَّ بُرْدَةٌ كُنْتُ إِذَا سَجَدْتُ تَقَلَّصَتْ عَنِّي قَالَ فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْحَيِّ أَلَا تُغَطُّوا عَنَّا اسْتَ قَارِئِكُمْ قَالَ فَكَسَوْنِي قَمِيصًا مِنْ مَعْقِدِ الْبَحْرَيْنِ فَمَا فَرِحْتُ بِشَيْءٍ أَشَدَّ مِنْ فَرَحِي بِذَلِكَ الْقَمِيصِ

'Amr ibn Salamah al-Jarmi said: "We were at a watering place on a route frequented by people. We would ask them: 'What is this matter?' They would say: 'A man claims he is a Prophet and that Allah has sent him, and that Allah has revealed to him such and such.' So I would not hear anything of it except that I memorized it, as if it were being glued in my chest. I gathered much Qur'an from the travelers. The Arabs were waiting for the Conquest of Makkah regarding their Islam, saying: 'Wait and see — if he prevails over them, he is truthful and he is a Prophet.' When news of the Conquest came to us, every tribe hastened with their Islam. My father went to announce the Islam of our clan. He stayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him) as long as Allah willed, then returned. When he drew near and we went out to meet him, he said: 'By Allah, I have truly come to you from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)!' Then he said: 'He commands you such and such, and forbids you such and such, and to pray such prayer at such time. When the time for prayer comes, let one of you give the call to prayer, and let the one among you who has memorized the most Qur'an lead you.' They looked among our clan and found no one who had memorized more Qur'an than me — from what I had memorized from the travelers. So they put me forward, and I led them in prayer while I was six years old. I had a striped cloak, and when I prostrated it would ride up on me. A woman from the clan said: 'Won't you cover the backside of your reciter from us?' So they clothed me with a shirt from Bahrain, and I was never happier about anything than I was about that shirt."
