Salamah ibn Qays al-Ashja'i said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to me in the Farewell Pilgrimage: 'There are four things I command you and four things I forbid you: I command you to believe in Allah alone — Do you know what belief in Allah alone is? It is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay zakat, to fast Ramadan, and to give one-fifth of the war spoils. And I forbid you four things: Do not drink from a gourd, a varnished vessel, a hollowed-out tree trunk, or a green-glazed jar.'"
