Sahl ibn Sa'd narrated: I was with Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi when he was told there was a dispute between Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf and the people of Quba'. He said: "That is old — it happened before." He continued: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when someone came and said: "Something has happened between the people of Quba'." The Prophet (peace be upon him) went to them to reconcile between them and was delayed. Bilal said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Shall I call the iqamah?" He said: "As you wish." So he called the iqamah, and the people put Abu Bakr forward. While he was praying, the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived and began passing through the rows until he stood behind Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). They began clapping. Abu Bakr did not turn around in prayer, but when they persisted, he turned and saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) standing behind him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured to him to continue praying. But he stepped back, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) stepped forward. When he finished, he said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "When I commanded you (to continue), why did you not continue?" He said: "It was not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "What is this clapping in prayer? Saying SubhanAllah is for men, and clapping is for women."
