Yazid ibn Hayyan said: Husayn ibn Sabrah, 'Umar ibn Muslim, and I went to Zayd ibn Arqam. When we sat with him, Husayn said: "O Zayd, you saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), heard his hadith, and fought alongside him — you have attained much good, O Zayd. Tell us what you witnessed and heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." He said: "O nephew, by Allah, I have grown old, my time has advanced, and I have forgotten some of what I used to retain from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). So whatever I narrate to you, accept it; and what I do not narrate, do not burden me with it." Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood one day among us as a preacher at a watering place called Khumm, between Makkah and Madinah. He praised Allah, exhorted and reminded, then said: 'O people, I am but a human being; soon the messenger of my Lord will come and I shall answer. I am leaving among you two weighty things: one of them is the Book of Allah, in which is guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and cling to it.' He urged the people to follow the Book of Allah and encouraged them. Then he said: 'And the people of my household — I remind you of Allah regarding the people of my household' — he said it three times." Husayn asked: "Who are the people of his household, O Zayd? Are not his wives among the people of his household?" He said: "His wives are among the people of his household, but the people of his household are those who are forbidden from receiving charity after him." He asked: "Who are they?" He said: "They are the family of 'Ali, the family of Ja'far, the family of al-'Abbas, and the family of 'Aqil." It was said: "All of these are forbidden from receiving charity?" He said: "Yes."
