Zayd ibn Thabit said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) died, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was made caliph. When the people of riddah (apostasy) appeared, 'Umar said: "How can we fight these people?" Abu Bakr said: "By Allah, I will fight whoever separates prayer from zakat (obligatory charity), for zakat is the right due upon wealth. By Allah, if they withhold from me even a young female goat that they used to give to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I will fight them for withholding it." 'Umar said: "By Allah, I saw that Allah had opened the heart of Abu Bakr for fighting, and I recognized that it was correct."
