قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ «إِنِّي أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ عِيرِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَنَّهَا مُقْبِلَةٌ فَهَلْ لَكُمْ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ قِبَلَ هَذَا الْعِيرِ؟ لَعَلَّ اللهُ يُغْنِمُنَاهَا» فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْنَا فَلَمَّا سِرْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ قَالَ لَنَا «مَا تَرَوْنَ فِي الْقَوْمِ فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ أُخْبِرُوا بِمَخْرَجِكُمْ؟» فَقُلْنَا لَا وَاللهِ مَالَنَا طَاقَةٌ بِقِتَالِ الْعَدُوِّ وَلَكِنْ أَرَدْنَا الْعِيرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَا تَرَوْنَ فِي قِتَالِ الْقَوْمِ؟» فَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو إِذَنْ لَا نَقُولُ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ مُوسَى لِمُوسَى {فَاذْهَبْ أَنْتَ وَرَبُّكَ فَقَاتِلَا إِنَّا هَاهُنَا قَاعِدُونَ} قَالَ فَتَمَنَّيْنَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ لَوْ أَنَّا قُلْنَا كَمَا قَالَ الْمِقْدَادُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْنَا مِنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَنَا مَالٌ عَظِيمٌ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ {كَمَا أَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَكَارِهُونَ يُجَادِلُونَكَ فِي الْحَقِّ بَعْدَ مَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ} ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {أَنِّي مَعَكُمْ فَثَبِّتُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الْأَعْنَاقِ وَاضْرِبُوا مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَانٍ} وَقَالَ {وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اللهُ إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْ} وَالشَّوْكَةُ الْقَوْمُ وَغَيْرُ ذَاتِ الشَّوْكَةِ الْعِيرُ فَلَمَّا وَعَدَنَا إِحْدَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ إِمَّا الْقَوْمُ وَإِمَّا الْعِيرُ طَابَتْ أَنْفُسُنَا ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ بَعَثَ رَجُلًا لِيَنْظُرَ مَا قِبَلَ الْقَوْمِ؟ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ سَوَادًا وَلَا أَدْرِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هُمْ هُمْ هَلُمُّوا أَنْ نَتَعَادَ» فَفَعَلْنَا فَإِذَا نَحْنُ ثَلَاثَ مِائَةٍ وَثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا فَأَخْبَرَنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ بِعِدَّتِنَا فَسَّرَهُ ذَلِكَ فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَقَالَ «عِدَّةُ أَصْحَابِ طَالُوتَ» ثُمَّ إِنَّا اجْتَمَعْنَا مَعَ الْقَوْمِ فَصَفَفْنَا فَبَدَرَتْ مِنَّا بَادِرَةٌ أَمَامَ الصَّفِّ فَنَظَرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ «مَعِي مَعِي» ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنِّي أَنْشُدُكَ وَعْدَكَ» فَقَالَ ابْنُ رَوَاحَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُشِيرَ عَلَيْكَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَفْضَلُ مَنْ يُشِيرُ عَلَيْهِ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ أَنْ تَنْشُدَهُ وَعْدَهُ فَقَالَ «يَا ابْنَ رَوَاحَةَ لَأَنْشُدَنَّ اللهَ وَعْدَهُ فَإِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ» فَأَخَذَ قَبْضَةً مِنَ التُّرَابِ فَرَمَى بِهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي وُجُوهِ الْقَوْمِ فَانْهَزَمُوا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللهَ رَمَى} فَقَتَلْنَا وَأَسَرْنَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ؓ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا أَرَى أَنْ يَكُونَ لَكَ أَسْرَى فَإِنَّمَا نَحْنُ دَاعُونَ مُوَلِّفُونَ فَقُلْنَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ إِنَّمَا يَحْمِلُ عُمَرُ عَلَى مَا قَالَ حَسَدًا لَنَا فَنَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «ادْعُوا لِي عُمَرَ» فَدُعِيَ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ عَلَيَّ {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ وَاللهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ} الطبراني ٤٠٥٦: عنقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَنَحْنُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ «إِنِّي أُخْبِرْتُ عَنْ عِيرِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ أَنَّهَا مُقْبِلَةٌ فَهَلْ لَكُمْ أَنْ نُخْرِجَ قِبَلَ هَذَا الْعِيرِ؟ لَعَلَّ اللهُ يُغْنِمُنَاهَا» فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْنَا فَلَمَّا سِرْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ يَوْمَيْنِ قَالَ لَنَا «مَا تَرَوْنَ فِي الْقَوْمِ فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ أُخْبِرُوا بِمَخْرَجِكُمْ؟» فَقُلْنَا لَا وَاللهِ مَالَنَا طَاقَةٌ بِقِتَالِ الْعَدُوِّ وَلَكِنْ أَرَدْنَا الْعِيرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَا تَرَوْنَ فِي قِتَالِ الْقَوْمِ؟» فَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو إِذَنْ لَا نَقُولُ لَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ مُوسَى لِمُوسَى {فَاذْهَبْ أَنْتَ وَرَبُّكَ فَقَاتِلَا إِنَّا هَاهُنَا قَاعِدُونَ} قَالَ فَتَمَنَّيْنَا مَعْشَرَ الْأَنْصَارِ لَوْ أَنَّا قُلْنَا كَمَا قَالَ الْمِقْدَادُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْنَا مِنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَنَا مَالٌ عَظِيمٌ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ {كَمَا أَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَكَارِهُونَ يُجَادِلُونَكَ فِي الْحَقِّ بَعْدَ مَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ} ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {أَنِّي مَعَكُمْ فَثَبِّتُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا سَأُلْقِي فِي قُلُوبِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الرُّعْبَ اللهِ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُشِيرَ عَلَيْكَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَفْضَلُ مَنْ يُشِيرُ عَلَيْهِ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ أَنْ تَنْشُدَهُ وَعْدَهُ فَقَالَ «يَا ابْنَ رَوَاحَةَ لَأَنْشُدَنَّ اللهَ يَحْمِلُ عُمَرُ عَلَى مَا قَالَ حَسَدًا لَنَا فَنَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ ثُمَّ قَالَ «ادْعُوا لِي عُمَرَ» فَدُعِيَ لَهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ عَلَيَّ {مَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ أَسْرَى حَتَّى يُثْخِنَ فِي الْأَرْضِ تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ الدُّنْيَا وَاللهُ يُرِيدُ الْآخِرَةَ وَاللهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ} الطبراني ٤٠٥٦: عن

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said while we were in Madinah: "I have been informed about Abu Sufyan's trade caravan that it is approaching. Would you like to go out to this caravan? Perhaps Allah will grant us its spoils." We said: "Yes." So he went out and we went out with him. After we had traveled for a day or two, he said: "What do you think about the [Quraysh] people? They have been informed of your departure." We said: "By Allah, we have no strength to fight the enemy, but we intended the caravan." Then he said: "What do you think about fighting the people?" We said the same. Al-Miqdad ibn 'Amr said: "Then we will not say to you, O Messenger of Allah, as the people of Musa said to Musa: 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight. We are sitting right here.'" He said: "We, the Ansar, wished we had said what al-Miqdad said — that would have been dearer to us than having great wealth." Then Allah revealed to His Messenger: 'Just as your Lord brought you out of your home in truth, while a party of the believers were unwilling, arguing with you about the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death while looking on.' Then Allah revealed: 'I am with you, so strengthen those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike above the necks and strike every fingertip of them.' And He said: 'And when Allah promised you one of the two groups that it would be yours — and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours.' The armed group was the enemy, and the unarmed one was the caravan. When He promised us one of the two groups — either the people or the caravan — our hearts were at ease. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent a man to see what the enemy was doing, and he said: 'I saw a dark mass but do not know more.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'That is them. Come, let us count ourselves.' We did, and we were three hundred and thirteen men. We informed the Messenger of Allah of our number, and he was pleased and praised Allah, saying: 'The number of the companions of Talut (Saul).' Then we met the enemy and formed ranks. Some of our men rushed ahead of the line, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) looked at them and said: 'With me, with me.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'O Allah, I invoke Your promise.' Ibn Rawahah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I wish to advise you, though the Messenger of Allah is the most worthy of being advised — Allah is too great for you to invoke His promise.' He said: 'O Ibn Rawahah, I will certainly invoke Allah's promise, for Allah does not break His promise.' He took a handful of dust and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) threw it in the faces of the enemy, and they were defeated. Then Allah revealed: 'And you did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw.' We killed and captured prisoners. 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I do not think you should have captives, for we are callers and uniters.' We, the Ansar, said: ''Umar only said what he said out of jealousy of us.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) slept, then awoke and said: 'Call 'Umar for me.' He was called, and the Prophet said: 'Allah has revealed to me: It is not for a prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land. You desire the goods of this world, but Allah desires the Hereafter.
