'Abdullah ibn Ja'far said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dispatched an army and appointed Zayd ibn Harithah as their commander, saying: "If Zayd is killed, then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib shall be your commander. If Ja'far is killed, then 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah." They set out and met the enemy. Zayd ibn Harithah took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Ja'far ibn Abi Talib took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah took the banner and fought until he was killed. Then Khalid ibn al-Walid took the banner, and Allah granted victory through him. News of them reached the Prophet (peace be upon him), so he went out, praised Allah and glorified Him, then said: "As for what follows — your brothers met the enemy. Zayd ibn Harithah took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then Ja'far took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah took the banner and fought until he was killed or martyred. Then a sword from the swords of Allah — Khalid ibn al-Walid — took the banner, and Allah granted victory through him." Then he waited three days before visiting the family of Ja'far. Then he came to them and said: "Do not weep for him after today." Then he said: "Bring me the sons of my brother." So we were brought to him like little chicks. He said: "Call for me the barber." He ordered him to shave our heads. Then he said: "As for Muhammad, he resembles our uncle Abu Talib. As for 'Awn, he resembles my appearance and character." Then he took my hand and raised it and said: "O Allah, be a successor for Ja'far in his family, and bless 'Abdullah in the transaction of his right hand" — three times. Then our mother came and mentioned our orphanhood. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Do you fear poverty for them? I am their guardian in this world and the Hereafter."
