Ibn Abbas said: I spent the night at my aunt Maymunah's house. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) got up startled, then fetched water and performed ablution. Then he recited: {Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth...} to the end of the surah. Then he began Surah al-Baqarah and recited it letter by letter until he completed it. Then he bowed and said: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.' Then he prostrated and said: 'Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.' Then he raised his head and said between the two prostrations: 'My Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, mend me, elevate me, provide for me, and guide me.' Then he stood and recited Al Imran in the second rak'ah until he completed it, then he bowed and prostrated, doing as he had done in the first. Then he lay down, then got up startled and did the same as in the first two, reciting letter by letter until he prayed eight rak'ahs, lying down between every two rak'ahs. He performed witr with three, then prayed the two rak'ahs of Fajr. Then he said: 'O Allah, place light in my soul, light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, and place light before me and light behind me, light on my right and light on my left, light beneath me and light above me, and grant me abundant light.'
