The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent word to Wahshi, the killer of Hamzah, inviting him to Islam. Wahshi sent back: 'O Muhammad, how do you call me to your religion when you claim that whoever kills, associates partners with Allah, or commits adultery will face punishment — the punishment will be multiplied for him on the Day of Resurrection and he will abide therein humiliated — and I have done all of that? Is there any concession for me?' So Allah revealed: {Except for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds — for them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds, and Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful}. Wahshi said: 'O Muhammad, that is a difficult condition — except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds — perhaps I will not be able to do that.' So Allah revealed: {Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills}. Wahshi said: 'O Muhammad, I see this is subject to Allah's will — I do not know if I will be forgiven or not. Is there anything else?' So Allah revealed: {O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful}. Wahshi said: 'This is it!' So he came and accepted Islam. The people said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what if we have done what Wahshi did?' He said: 'It is for all the Muslims.'
