Ibn Abbas narrated that two verses from Surah al-Ma'idah were abrogated: the verse about the sacrificial animal and garlands, and the other verse: 'So judge between them or turn away from them.' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was given a choice regarding that; if he wished, he would judge between them, and if he wished, he would refer them to another judge, until the verse was revealed: "So judge between them by what Allah has revealed."'
