Ibn Abbas said: "'Umar used to admit me along with the elders of Badr. Some of them said: 'Why do you admit this youth among us when we have sons like him?' He said: 'He is from whom you know.' One day he called them and called me — and I did not think he called me that day except to show them my capability. He said: 'What do you say about {When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest, and you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes}?' — until the end of the surah. Some of them said: 'We were commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness when we are given victory and conquest.' Some said: 'We do not know,' and others said nothing. He said to me: 'O Ibn Abbas, is that what you say?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Then what do you say?' I said: 'It is the term (death) of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Allah informed him: When the victory of Allah comes and the conquest — meaning the conquest of Makkah — that is the sign of your term. So glorify the praises of your Lord and ask His forgiveness; indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.' 'Umar said: 'I know nothing of it except what you know.'"
