It is narrated from Ibn Shamasa al-Mahri, who said: We went to Hadrat Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be well pleased with him) when he was on his deathbed. He wept for a long time and turned his face towards the wall. His son said: Dear father, did the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) not give you glad tidings of such-and-such? Did he not give you glad tidings of such-and-such? He then turned his face towards us and said: The best provision that we prepare (for the Hereafter) is the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). I have passed through three stages. (The first:) I found myself in a state where no one harboured more hatred for the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) than I, and nothing was dearer to me than to overpower and kill him. Had I died in that state, I would certainly have been among the denizens of the Fire. (The second:) When Allah placed the love of Islam in my heart, I came to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and submitted: Extend your right hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) extended his right hand, but I withdrew my hand. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: What is the matter with you, O Amr? I submitted: I wish to lay down a condition. He stated: What condition do you wish to put forward? I submitted: That I be forgiven. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: O Amr, do you not know that Islam wipes out all previous sins, that migration wipes out all that came before it, and that the Pilgrimage wipes out all that preceded it? At that time, no one was dearer to me than the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and none was more exalted in my eyes than he. I could not even gaze fully at his blessed countenance due to his splendour. If I were asked to describe his features, I would be unable to do so because I never gazed upon him fully. Had I died in that state, I had every reason to hope that I would be among the dwellers of Paradise. Then (the third stage:) we assumed certain responsibilities, and I do not know what my state has been regarding them. When I die, let no wailing woman accompany me, nor any fire. When you have buried me, fill my grave gently with earth, then remain standing around my grave for the time it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat — so that I may find comfort in your company and see what reply I give to the messengers of my Lord.

ابن شماسہ مہری سے روایت ہے، انہوں نے کہا: ہم حضرت عمرو بن عاص رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے پاس حاضر ہوئے، وہ موت کے سفر پر روانہ تھے، روتے جاتے تھے اور اپنا چہرہ دیوار کی طرف کر لیا تھا۔ ان کے بیٹے کہنے لگے: ابا جان! کیا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے آپ کو فلاں چیز کی بشارت نہ دی تھی؟ کیا فلاں بات کی بشارت نہ دی تھی؟ انہوں نے ہماری طرف رخ کیا اور کہا: جو کچھ ہم (آیندہ کے لیے) تیار کرتے ہیں، یقیناً اس میں سے بہترین یہ گواہی ہے کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اللہ کے رسول ہیں۔ میں تین درجوں (مرحلوں) میں رہا۔ (پہلا یہ کہ) میں نے اپنے آپ کو اس حالت میں پایا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ مجھ سے زیادہ بغض کسی کو نہ تھا اور نہ اس سے کوئی اور بات زیادہ پسند تھی کہ میں آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر قابو پا کر آپ کو قتل کر دوں۔ اگر میں اس حالت میں مر جاتا تو یقیناً دوزخی ہوتا۔ (دوسرے مرحلے میں) جب اللہ تعالیٰ نے میرے دل میں اسلام کی محبت پیدا کر دی تو میں نبی اکرم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اور عرض کیا: اپنا دایاں ہاتھ بڑھائیے تاکہ میں آپ کی بیعت کروں، آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے دایاں ہاتھ بڑھایا، کہا: تو میں نے اپنا ہاتھ (پیچھے) کھینچ لیا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: عمرو! تمہیں کیا ہوا ہے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: میں ایک شرط رکھنا چاہتا ہوں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: کیا شرط رکھنا چاہتے ہو؟ میں نے عرض کیا: یہ (شرط) کہ مجھے معافی مل جائے۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: عمرو! کیا تمہیں معلوم نہیں کہ اسلام ان تمام گناہوں کو ساقط کر دیتا ہے جو اس سے پہلے کے تھے؟ اور ہجرت ان تمام گناہوں کو ساقط کر دیتی ہے جو اس (ہجرت) سے پہلے کیے گئے تھے اور حج ان سب گناہوں کو ساقط کر دیتا ہے جو اس سے پہلے کے تھے۔ اس وقت مجھے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے زیادہ محبوب کوئی نہ تھا اور نہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے بڑھ کر میری نظر میں کسی کی عظمت تھی، میں آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی عظمت کی بنا پر آنکھ بھر کر آپ کو دیکھ بھی نہ سکتا تھا اور اگر مجھ سے آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کا حلیہ پوچھا جائے تو میں بتا نہ سکوں گا کیونکہ میں آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو آنکھ بھر کر دیکھتا ہی نہ تھا اور اگر میں اس حالت میں مر جاتا تو مجھے امید ہے کہ میں جنتی ہوتا، پھر (تیسرا مرحلہ یہ آیا) ہم نے کچھ چیزوں کی ذمہ داری لے لی، میں نہیں جانتا ان میں میرا حال کیسا رہا؟ جب میں مر جاؤں تو کوئی نوحہ کرنے والی میرے ساتھ نہ جائے، نہ ہی آگ ساتھ ہو اور جب تم مجھے دفن کر چکو تو مجھ پر آہستہ آہستہ مٹی ڈالنا، پھر میری قبر کے گرد اتنی دیر (دعا کرتے ہوئے) ٹھہرنا، جتنی دیر میں اونٹ ذبح کر کے اس کا گوشت تقسیم کیا جا سکتا ہے تاکہ میں تمہاری وجہ سے (اپنی نئی منزل کے ساتھ) مانوس ہو جاؤں اور دیکھ لوں کہ میں اپنے رب کے فرستادوں کو کیا جواب دیتا ہوں۔
