Abu Hadrad al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent us on a military expedition. Among us were Abu Qatadah al-Ansari and Muhallim ibn Jaththamah ibn Qays. While we were on our way, Amir ibn al-Adbat al-Ashja'i passed by us and greeted us with the Islamic greeting. We held back from him, but Muhallim ibn Jaththamah attacked and killed him, and took his camel and a leather milk container he had with him. When we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the Quran was revealed concerning us: "O you who believe, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, verify" [al-Nisa 4:94] to the end of the verse. [In another narration:] The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed Zuhr and then sat in the shade of a tree. Al-Aqra' ibn Habis and Uyaynah ibn Badr came — Uyaynah seeking the blood of the Ashja'i man, and al-Aqra' defending the killer. They argued before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at length. He said: "Rather, accept the blood money — fifty camels now during our journey and fifty when we return." He kept persuading them until they accepted. When they accepted, they said: Where is your companion, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) may seek forgiveness for him? A tall man wearing a suit (as if prepared for execution) stood and sat before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He asked: "What is your name?" He said: I am Muhallim ibn Jaththamah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim ibn Jaththamah." He stood up from before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), wiping his tears with the edge of his garment.

سیدنا ابو حَدْرَدٍ رضی الله عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں ایک سرّیہ میں بھیجا، جس میں میں بھی شامل تھا اور ابو قتادہ انصاری اور مُحَلِّم بن جثامة بن قیس بھی شامل تھے، ہم جا رہے تھے کہ ہمارے پاس سے عامر بن الأضبط أشجعی گزرا اور اس نے ہمیں سلام کا اسلامی تحیہ پیش کیا، ہم نے اسے قتل نہ کیا، پھر مُحَلِّم بن جثامة نے حملہ کر کے اسے قتل کر دیا اور اس کا اونٹ اور رطب (تازہ کھجوریں) جو اس کے پاس تھے، چھین لیے، جب ہم رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم کے پاس آئے، تو ہمارے متعلق قرآن اترا:﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ فَتَبَيَّنُوا...﴾(النساء: 94) آخر آیت تک۔ عروہ بن زبیر کہتے ہیں: میرے باپ اور دادا غزوہ حنین میں رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ تھے، انہوں نے مجھے بتایا: رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے ظہر کی نماز ادا کی پھر درخت کے سائے میں بیٹھ گئے، اقرع بن حابس اور عُيَيْنَة بن بدر آپ کے سامنے کھڑے ہو گئے، عُيَيْنَة أشجعی کے خون کا مطالبہ کر رہے تھے اور اقرع اس کا دفاع کر رہے تھے، چنانچہ وہ دونوں رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم کے سامنے کافی دیر جھگڑتے رہے، رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: دیت کے پچاس اونٹ دوران سفر لے لو اور پچاس واپس جا کر، رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم کہتے رہے حتیٰ کہ وہ دیت پر راضی ہو گئے، جب وہ دیت لینے پر راضی ہو گئے تو کہنے لگے: تمہارا ساتھی (مُحَلِّم) کہاں ہے؟ تاکہ رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم اس کے لیے استغفار کر دیں، ایک لمبا آدمی کھڑا ہوا جس نے حُلّہ (جوڑا) پہنا ہوا تھا اور قتل ہونے کے لیے تیار تھا، وہ رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم کے سامنے بیٹھ گیا، تو آپ نے پوچھا: نام کیا ہے؟ اس نے کہا: میں مُحَلِّم بن جثامة ہوں، رسول الله صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اللہ مُحَلِّم بن جثامة کو معاف نہ کرے۔ چنانچہ وہ اپنی چادر سے آنسو پونچھتا ہوا اٹھ کھڑا ہوا۔[المنتقى ابن الجارود/كتاب الطلاق/حدیث: 777]
